Death and the Maiden

by Ariel Dorfman February 2009

Death of a Maiden Poster

Paulina Escobar is the wife to a prominent lawyer, Gerardo, in an unnamed South American country. One day a storm forces her husband to ride home with a stranger. That chance encounter brings up demons from her past, as she is convinced that the stranger, a Doctor Miranda, was part of the old fascist regime that blindfolded, tortured and raped her.. Paulina takes him captive to determine the ‘truth’. Paulina is torn between her psychological repressions and sombre memory, Gerardo is torn between his wife and the law, and Doctor Miranda is forced to endure captivity while husband and wife seek out the uncertain truth about the clouded past.

“It is a terrifying moral thriller which combines brilliant theatricality with clear thought and fierce compassion”
