There Came a Gypsy Riding
by Frank McGuinness November 2009
There Came a Gypsy Riding This new play – written by acclaimed playwright Frank McGuinness, tells the story of an Irish family gathered at their seaside holiday home to mark what would have been the twenty-first birthday of Eugene, son and brother. It is a heart-warming tale of loss and love told with passion and brave wit. Strong emotions are brilliantly interwoven with wicked humour, song and dance, folk lore, poetry and ‘the fine art of Irish insult’. Through the five strong characters (mother, father, grown-up son and daughter, and ‘confused fairy’ Cousin Bridget), we see how an injured and disparate family fights and makes peace; how they find the strength to talk about resentments and deep feelings; how they are able finally to join together to ease the path ahead. |
