Life x 3
by Yasmina Reza (translated by Christopher Hampton) April 2008
This clever and very funny play was first seen at the National Theatre in 2000 with the enviable cast of Harriet Walter, Imelda Staunton, Mark Rylance and Oliver Cotton. Henri and Sonia are putting their son to bed when there is a knock at the door and Hubert and Inés arrive for dinner; unfortunately a day early and there’s no real food in the house! What transpires is high comedy blended with poignant observation of four people and their interaction together. Even more clever is the fact that in each act (there are three, hence the title) the same situation is played out in another way, going to show that with changed circumstances, moods or attitudes, life can turn out so differently. |
